Perplexity launches its own take on AI agents for work

Perplexity's Teammates are always-on work agents that juggle roles inside a workspace — but they live behind the $200-a-month Max plan, a steep ticket next to OpenAI Dots and Claude Duet.
Why it matters
Work agents are the new battleground. OpenAI has Dots, Anthropic has Claude Duet, and now Perplexity is shipping Teammates that stay on, take multiple roles, and pull projects, skills, and memory from tools people already use in Perplexity.
Teammates sit on top of Perplexity Computer, which can run agents on-device, and are pitched for ongoing, large-scale collaboration rather than one-shot tasks. Each gets its own thread; you can watch progress in the app or talk to them in Slack. CEO Aravind Srinivas says the vision is hundreds of teammates working for each person in an org.
The catch is price: Max at $200 a month. That is a bet that serious agent labor is a premium seat, not a free-tier toy.
From the desk
We're watching the agent race standardize around the same shape — persistent workers, parallel roles, chat surfaces at work — while the pricing tells you who thinks the feature is a wedge versus a profit center.
Perplexity's edge has been answer quality with citations. Teammates extend that into continuity: memory, skills, and Computer-based execution that does not reset every prompt. Slack integration is the right distribution move; work already lives there. Srinivas's "hundreds of teammates per person" line is the bull case and the governance nightmare in one sentence.
I'm constructive on the product direction and skeptical of the blank check. Always-on agents that can act across tools will help teams ship research, ops, and drafting faster when scoped well. They will also multiply silent failures, permission mistakes, and spend when scoped poorly — especially at $200 a month before you count tool actions. If Max is where real agent labor lives, Perplexity is choosing a high-ACV motion over mass adoption. That can work for power users. It also leaves room for rivals to undercut on price once the pattern is copied.
Useful agents earn their seat by finishing work you would have done. The downside if this wave scales carelessly: inboxes full of autonomous busywork and orgs that cannot audit which teammate changed what.
Context
Perplexity has been pushing upmarket from consumer search into workplace software. Computer was the on-device execution layer; Teammates are the organizational layer on top. OpenAI and Anthropic are shipping parallel concepts in the same fortnight-scale window.
Who feels it
- Knowledge workers on Max
- A way to parallelize research and ops chores inside Perplexity with Slack visibility.
- IT and security teams
- New always-on identities to permission, monitor, and revoke — especially once hundreds-per-person becomes literal.
- OpenAI and Anthropic
- Competitive pressure to match persistence and workspace memory, not just chat quality.
- Perplexity's business
- A clear monetization path for Max — or a ceiling if $200 filters out the curious majority.
What to watch
- Real workflow case studies that show Teammates finishing multi-day work, not demos.
- Whether Max subscriber growth accelerates or stalls after the launch spike.
- Admin controls for permissions, spend caps, and audit logs on Teammate actions.
- Feature parity responses from ChatGPT and Claude workplace tiers.
